On the chat last night we talked a little about a forum for computer information and help. I would like to start it out with some free programs that anyone might want to use. I have downloaded all of these and currently use them. They are called "open" programs as they are the colaboration of many individuals working together on the internet to develop them. Most are funded by universities and are used as a teaching aid for programmers. If you have some programming skills, you may also help develop these tools.
1. The "GIMP" http://www.gimp.org This is a very useful graphics program which allows one to work with photos, images, or text to develop artistic creations. I use it to make banners and icons for my web sites. It's big, complicated, and works great. Just takes some time playing with it to really start building creations.
2. "Paint.com" http://www.getpaint.net/ I use this program to replace Corel Photo House which no longer works on window XP. I use it to size and improve digital photos. It is also a paint program and you can use it for many more tasks. It is simpler to use than the Gimp, but won't do as much.
3. "Open Office" http://www.openoffice.org Microsoft wants me to buy "Office 03". My old Office 97 no longer works with all the different formats of documents that I get. I don't want to pay the money. Open Office takes the place of "03". It has a word prosessor which is almost identical to "Word", it has a power point program, a spread sheet, and some other features as well. Open Office is a HUGE download. Using my DSL line it took me almost two and a half hours to download it. It is worth it! I use it all the time now.
All of these programs are free. They do ask that if you find them useful you contribute by either helping develop them further, or make a monetary contribution. There is no pressure about this however. |

I have long used Vueprint, it is a quick and easy viewing software with a ton of features. I like the resizing function the best, just hit the 'z' key and type in the resolution you want, like 800, it figures out the rest.

Felt generous Friday and bought my wife a new Garmin 330 satellite navigation device. Did a little research on the internet and found that believe it or not, Wal-Mart was the best place to buy it. Cost $300.00 plus tax and it's ready to go. She loves it.
Used it on the way to a Blue Grass Festical yesterday. We know the way quite well as it is only 12 miles from our home, so we tried to confuse the Garmin. Couldn't!! We turned on a short cut that had been gravel until it was recently paved and the Garmin instantly recalculated our route to include it. Amazing! Then came to an intersection that had been a curve with an intersecting road and had been changed into a T intersection with a stop sign. At first the Garmin showed the curve, but then as we stopped it instantly changed to reflect the intersection as it is today. I am totally impressed!!!! |

I started with a Garmin 2610 and graduated to a Garmin Nuvi660. Our province will outlaw the use of handheld cellphones April 1 so the 660 with bluetooth is the answer. Note to anyone using Garmin and coming to Canada. their maps do not do us justice and you can buy the Canada maps v4 from them for $99. It is an old map but better than what they provide with their "North American" v7. It is an unprotected map. |

Are you serious? Are they really outlawing cell phones? |

Just to clarify, it is the use of handheld cell phones while driving. Handsfree are fine but if you get caught with it in your hand while driving it is $133 first time going up to over $300 on 3rd offense. Newfoundland brought in that law about 2 years ago. What I do not understand is why not ban smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, arguing with a spouse ( that would get my support). All the above are distracting. In the citiy you often see someone driving to work, smoking, with a coffee and a cellphone propped on their ear. That is an accident waiting to happen. The cautionary point is that be prepared for the car in front of you to slam on their brakes and pull over anywhere when their cell phone rings. |

Well, looks like Canada has some of the same problems that we have here in the states. Our politicians want to mother us too.
As a matter of fact, I do support not driving and talking on the handset at the same time. I am always watching and I'll bet that fully half of the people I meet are on the phone. Okay, they're mostly female, but I also see semi drivers doing it to.
I bought a Blue Tooth. I think it makes a very large difference when I am driving. I think that cell phones should all come complete with a Blue tooth. |

Most cell phones now atre equiped with the Bluetooth technology. It is convincing the users to buy the ear peice or other hands free device. My Garmin Nuvi 660 has Bluetooth and when the phone rings I simply touch the screen and the call goes through the Nuvi speakers and microphone. If I am listening to MP3's via the FM radio, the radio speakers act as the speakers for the phonecall. It also will pause the music until you cancel the call. The call auto cancels when the other party hangs up so you do not have to do anything. A simple touch of a few screen icons and it will phone home for you. I like it so much I just bought a second 660 for my wife's car. Also easy to transfer between units. |

That sounds pretty good. We already have two Garmins. I have an old Street Pilot that I use in the Motorhome, and my wife has a Garmin 320 for her car. Maybe its time for me to upgrade. |

I already feel outdated with my garmin 340, a steal at $180 last black Friday (07). It does have a disclaimer on boot up about how 'entering route details while driving can result in death!' I'm all for a ban on talking on a cell phone while driving. A blue tooth device would give me the other hand back, however, talking to my wife on the cell does demand a fair share of my attention. Just as well the sheriff cannot give me a ticket for daydreaming as I've driven many miles on autopilot! |

Posted By COOPERHAWK on 03/18/2008 2:35 PM I have an old Street Pilot that I use in the Motorhome, I got hooked on the GPS idea a number of years ago and also have an old Gramin 2610 Street Pilot. It has been in "storage" for a while but will come out for the motorhome shortly. The problem is that the MH was originally a US model and the speedo is in MPH with KPH in small print. So small I cannot see it...old eyes. I plan to have the 2610 as a speedo only in KPH so I can see how fast/slow I am going. For directions I will use the Nuvi660.

My Street Pilot mounts on a bracket I made that puts it beside the left side of the windshield where I can easily see it. I use it as a speedomenter as it is much more accurate. |

It ia quite amazing how the different speedos are calibrated. My 96 Volvo is set to show that I am going 5 KPH faster than the actual. Volvo said they do this on all their cars so that any change in tire size will not get you a ticket and you then cannot blame them. My 97 Subaru and 06 Ford F150 are both out only 2-3 KPH. Havent done a check on the Georgie Boy as yet. BUT soon ! |

It's actually more accurate than my speedometer. Also has a moving map displayed at the same time. |
