Better air intake?

I recently inherited an 88 Suncrest with a Chevy 454. It was in pretty sad shape, but after a dozen weekends, it's looking like it's ready to travel. After finishing an engine tune-up, I noticed that the engine air intake is pitiful. When I blip the throttle, the filter housing nearly implodes. There seems to be lots of room to bring fresh air to the carb, but before I start cutting, I was wondering if anyone else has already played around with air intake, and had some good ideas to share.

Don't you have the standard tall (6") air cleaner with the fire carbon retarder inside, I cannot see your air filter housing bending inwards since it's metal.... The/your air snout should be about 9" long and you can add on some dryer hose and suck in some much needed cold air...... Jim

MY pal has a 454 we bought it on a wednesday and had to drive it 1000miles starting that afternoon. first thing we did was put in a snorkel to get cold air into the system then we replaced the spark plusg with a set that had 3 electrodes. This was going on while the gals were packing . we got 9 miles to the gallon driving it home from buying it.and after those two tweaks we started to get 11 to 12 MPG. .after that trip we just treated it like a standard drag car motor with cheap simple common mods. headers/Xtube/ new wires etc. and that is twoing a 24 foot racing trailer. on the light side. and on the flat east coast tr,95. Yep it's all true! WIDE LOAD . I bought my first winne today with a 454 in a 22 footer BRAVE. yippie!

My old 79 had a regular air filter and housing. I got the snorkel from a 1991 Cadillac , A flex hose from a Mercury that fit and a piece of 4 inch exhaust pipe i cut to fit with the flex hose and on the front ahead, I put an K&N snorkel!! All but the K/N was free. and since I bought the filter from them they gave me a foot of that 4" pipe. Worked good and I haven't had any issues at all! Good luck with you project, Dan

If i may add to the intake thing, Ihave used the stock airfilter housing for my 85 coachmen, chevy 454, added duct hose to the front to grab cooler air, also added increase to the main metering jet pungers, slight lessen the secondary spring tension, plugs wires etc. adjusted timing. also added 1inch plastic carburator insulator stack and fabricated an aluminum heat shield to isolate manifold heat transfer from the carburator base. also added a transmission oil and p/s fluid cooler. Added a pusher fan assembly from a 2000 winny with a workhorse chassis, all junk I've been hording around, also pickup 2 100amp battery isolators and will add one in warmer weather. Not bad for something not on the road yet.

To add more stuff, I have another a/c evaporator core and expansion valve from the same winny, and a heater core, I am planning to make an aux. heater/a/c module under one of the dinnette benches this spring. just need to barter with a buddy who is a sheet metal worker for the sheet metal housing to be made, told him I will fix his car for him. Even if it is a chrysler, ha ha, being a GM tech and all.
